Rafael Coronel (Zacatecas, October 24, 1931 – Cuernavaca, May 7, 2019) was a distinguished Mexican painter and sculptor, renowned for his unique style that fused Expressionism and Surrealism, exploring the complexity of the human condition.
From an early age, Coronel showed a strong inclination toward the arts, beginning his studies at the National School of Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City. Throughout his career, he held numerous exhibitions in Mexico, the United States, Japan, Puerto Rico, and Brazil, establishing himself as a key figure in contemporary Mexican art.
Some of his most notable works include Concilio, Los amigos, and Niño azul, which reflect his deep interest in human nature and his ability to transform emotions into plastic forms. In 1990, the Rafael Coronel Museum was inaugurated in his hometown, Zacatecas, in recognition of his artistic legacy.
Rafael Coronel passed away on May 7, 2019, in Cuernavaca, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be studied and admired both nationally and internationally.
